Vanaf 1993 werden de laboratoria voorbereid op de verplichting tot het werken onder een vastgelegd kwaliteitssysteem, zoals dit werd vastgelegd in het erkenningsbesluit van 3 december 1999. Voor het organiseren van de externe kwaliteitsevaluatieprogramma’s beschikt de dienst Kwaliteit van medische laboratoria over een accreditatie ISO/EIC 17043.
