La Directive européenne 2007/2/CE - Directive INSPIRE - établit une infrastructure d'information géographique dans la Communauté européenne. INSPIRE s'applique à 34 domaines thématiques répartis en 3 Annexes. La présente série comprend les couches de données géographiques faisant référence aux sites protégés (Annexe 1.9). Au sens de la Directive, les sites protégés sont : "des zones désignées ou gérées dans un cadre législatif international, communautaire ou national en vue d’atteindre des objectifs spécifiques de conservation". Chaque site protégé peut être attaché à un ou plusieurs mécanismes de désignation spécifiques. Parmi ces mécanismes se trouvent les sites protégés appartenant au réseau Natura 2000. Natura 2000 est un réseau écologique européen de zones protégées naturelles (tourbières, forêts, rivières, rochers, grottes), semi-naturelles (prairies fleuries, pelouses sèches, landes, etc.) ou servant d'habitat propre à certaines espèces animales ou végétales. L'objectif global de ce réseau est de maintenir la biodiversité des milieux en définissant un cadre commun pour la conservation des habitats naturels ainsi que de la faune et de la flore sauvages sur le territoire des États membres. Les sites "Natura 2000" sont proposés par les États membres, en application des directives européennes "Oiseaux" (2009) et "Habitats" (1992) qui constituent la base légale du projet. De 2002 à 2005, Le Gouvernement wallon a ainsi défini 240 sites Natura 2000 (Décision du GW - 24 mars 2005), ce qui représente quelques 221.000 ha, soit 13% du territoire wallon. Ces sites sont composés de forêts (feuillus, résineux, mixtes), terres agricoles, zones humides et cours d’eau. Les sites désignés comme appartenant au réseau Natura 2000 sont extraits de la série de couches de données INSPIRE "Sites protégés en Wallonie" qui reprend l'ensemble des sites protégés. La sélection se base sur le mécanisme utilisé pour procéder à la désignation des sites protégés et dont la valeur correspond aux sites appartenant au réseau Natura 2000." @default.

Elk beschermd gebied kan worden gekoppeld aan een of meer specifieke aanwijzingsmechanismen. Tot deze mechanismen behoren beschermde gebieden die deel uitmaken van het Natura 2000-netwerk. Natura 2000 is een Europees ecologisch netwerk van beschermde natuurgebieden (veengebieden, bossen, rivieren, rotsen, grotten), semi-natuurlijke (bloemrijke weiden, droge gazons, heidevelden, enz.) of gebruikt als habitat specifiek voor bepaalde dier- of plantensoorten. De algemene doelstelling van dit netwerk is de instandhouding van de biodiversiteit van het milieu door de vaststelling van een gemeenschappelijk kader voor de instandhouding van de natuurlijke habitats en de wilde flora en fauna op het grondgebied van de lidstaten. De "Natura 2000"-gebieden worden door de lidstaten voorgesteld op grond van de Europese richtlijnen "Vogels" (2009) en "Habitats" (1992), die de rechtsgrondslag voor het project vormen. Van 2002 tot 2005 heeft de Waalse regering 240 Natura 2000-gebieden afgebakend (GW-beschikking - 24 maart 2005), die ongeveer 221.000 ha vertegenwoordigen, ofwel 13% van het Waalse grondgebied. Deze gebieden bestaan uit bossen (loof, naaldbomen, gemengd), landbouwgrond, wetlands en rivieren. De gebieden die zijn aangewezen als behorend tot het Natura 2000-netwerk zijn afkomstig uit de reeks INSPIRE-gegevenslagen "Beschermde gebieden in Wallonië", die alle beschermde gebieden omvat. Das übergeordnete Ziel dieses Netzes besteht darin, die biologische Vielfalt der Lebensräume zu erhalten, indem ein gemeinsamer Rahmen für die Erhaltung der natürlichen Lebensräume sowie der wildlebenden Tiere und Pflanzen im Hoheitsgebiet der Mitgliedstaaten festgelegt wird. Die Natura-2000-Gebiete werden von den Mitgliedstaaten gemäß der EU-Vogelschutzrichtlinie (2009) und der Habitat-Richtlinie (1992) vorgeschlagen, die die Rechtsgrundlage für das Projekt bilden. Zwischen 2002 und 2005 hat die Wallonische Regierung 240 Natura-2000-Gebiete definiert (GW-Beschluss - 24. März 2005), was etwa 221.000 ha entspricht, was 13% des wallonischen Territoriums entspricht.
